Hailing from Port Arthur, Texas, B-DO & T.O.E, known as “Da Underdawgz”, are on the way to being in the mainstream. The two teamed up with Port Arthur legend Pimp C in 2007, which eventually solidified them as artists in the UGK Records click. The duo’s first song with Pimp C, “Grind Hard”, produced by B-DO, landed them a spot on the highly successful UGK self titled double album “Underground Kingz”.
December 4th, 2007, a huge blow was delivered to the group with the untimely passing of Pimp C. Since his death, there has been no time for relaxing and they have stayed on a constant grind. B-DO was featured in Lupe Fiasco’s Hip Hop Saved My Life as the main character. Recently, KeepItTrill.com caught up with the duo to find out more about them.
First, tell me a little something about yourselves. Where are you from originally and how did you guys get into doing music?
T.O.E: “Im from Port Arthur Texas, you dig? I got into music with one of my homies from over here that’s still doing it…. but before we get into this I gotta say R.I.P Pimp C”
How did your affiliation come about with Pimp C and UGK Records?
Toe: “I’ve been knowing Pimp since he came home from jail. I paid him for a verse, and then he liked what he heard from me so he wanted to get me signed, and get back the money I paid him.”
B-DO: “Yeah… we met Pimp when he first came home but we started working with him in the beginning of 2007”
B-do, you have a unique type of flow that has yet to be heard in the rap game. Combined with T.O.E’s flow & Pimp C type swagger, you guys make a formidable team. How did you guys come to work together?
B-Do: “Me & TOE hooked up & got at Pimp. Our 1st song we did together made UGK’s album ‘Grind Hard’.”
How did you feel when you found out that the first song you recorded with Pimp and Bun would make the final cut for the album?
T.O.E: “It was like a dream come true.. I couldn’t believe it.”
B-Do: “Pimp saw our work ethics & fucked wit us hard. Being from P. A, it was a dream come true! UGK are pioneers from the south & with them stamping us that mean the world to me.”
How did UGK influence you guys growing up, especially being from Port Arthur?
B-Do: “Pimp & Bun raised me on records! So when he told me I was down with UGK…. words can’t describe what it meant to me! I have a strong musical background & I knew one day that long as I focused & worked hard I’d work with them! Coming from PA it shows you that you can achieve your dreams! That’s what they did for our hood… they put us on the map.”
T.O.E: “Mayne, it influenced me in the same way. Just to see somebody could do it, especially where we from. Ya gotta respect that ya know?”
Is it true that The Underdawgz was orginally supposed to be a three man group, with Pimp C being the third group member?
T.O.E: “Yeah… man, we started workin’ on songs for an album shortly after the UGK album dropped… But ya know, unfortunately we couldn’t complete it since Pimp had passed. We just kept on pushin like Pimp would have wanted us to do… and just took it and ran with it.”
How did you come up with the name the Underdawgz?
B-Do: “Man, that was all Pimp’s idea… He came up with the name. He was an underdog himself, so he always f*cked with the all of the other underdogs to help them out. That man had a heart that was bigger than himself and he’d do anything to help anyone out.”
I can definitely relate to that, since Pimp gave me the inspiration and support to start my own thing to do what we’re doing now. Aside from working with Pimp and Bun, what other major artists have you guys worked with so far?
B-Do/ T.O.E: “We’ve worked with Three Six (Mafia), E.S.G, Lloyd, Young Buck, David Banner, Big Pokey and Crime Boss.”
Throughout the history of mainstream hip-hop, the different styles have changed tremendously. Many people consider the current state of hip-hop to be weaker than ever, not only because of low sales, but also due to poor quality. What are your thoughts of hip-hop in its current state and does it need to be saved?
B-Do: Hip Hop ain’t dead….Niggaz just makin bullshit albums! Artist focus on singles instead of albums….that’s why they’re selling millions of ringtones & their album sales suck!!! Wayne went gold in a day & platinum in a week…. it ain’t dead!!!
T.O.E: “I definitely don’t think its dead, so I can’t say that it should be saved.. I think hip-hop is just finally showing the world that we can all make money…”
B-Do, you recently hooked up with Lupe fiasco and played the main character in his video for his video “Hip-hop Saved My Life”. How did this collaboration happen?
B-Do: Shouts to Lupe for showing me love on that video! That was a good look! Bun got me that part. When I got that call that 1 really fucked me up
Do you have any plans as an artist on working with Lupe on any future projects?
B-Do: Yes sir!
When can we expect to see any new songs or albums from “The Underdawgz”?
T.O.E: “We’re always workin on new music. If you wanna stay up to date with us, just check us out on the myspace page cause we always leaking it to our fans their first.”
B-Do: “Yeah and we will be releasing a couple of mixtapes to the streets real soon”
Already! and how can everyone find you on myspace:
B-Do: “myspace.com/underdawgz4life is the group myspace and mine is myspace.com/djbdo”
T.O.E: “You can hit me up at myspace.com/toepa15”
Any last things you would like to say for the world to know?
T.O.E: “UGK 4 LIFE! As long as the world is sayin that im cool.”
B-Do: Already! We holdin it down for Pimp C & we still Grindin Hard….UGK 4 LIFE
