The GS Boyz

April 13, 2009 | Interview by: Trill Chris

Following the paradigm put forth by Soulja Boy, the next wave of grass-roots groundshakers is here: meet The GS Boyz. Looking to combat the escalating gang-related violence they witnessed daily, the GS Boyz focused on making positive, feel-good music that’d move people to dance, not fight. After millions of hits on YouTube, a song and dance sensation was born, now reverberating through clubs and pounding out of passing cars. But lest you dismiss them as sheer copycats, note that Soulja Boy himself co-signed the talented Texas two-steppers, inviting them to participate on his national tour.

KeepItTrill.com: For those who don’t know you personally, who are the GS Boyz?

Marc D: The official members of the GS Boyz are Prince Charming, Marc D, Soufside, SLIZZ & D.K.

KeepItTrill.com: How did you guys come together as a group?

Marc D: We met through high school in [the] Dallas Fort Worth area. Prince Charming met SLIZZ in English class. He was the one who started the new group, because at that time, everyone was having these little fighting clicks. We wanted to do something positive and fun, like a party crew where guys and girls could kick it and we called it G-Spot.

Prince met up with Slizz in English. Met up with me cause’ I was always beating on the table. Met up with D.K. at the Parks Mall down in Arlington, where he always be hangin’ and we met Soufside through a sister that Slizz knew.

KeepItTrill.com: Your song “Stanky Legg” [listen here] has been making a lot of noise throughout the south. How did you come up with the concept and dance for it?

Soufside: In Dallas, we boogie all the time and the GS Boyz was just like, ‘man, lets just switch it up, like a dance.’ D and Prince Charming was at my house. Basically they had brought the beat over and he and Charles was like ‘bruh, we can’t do nothing with this beat man cuz I’m ready to fight.’ I wanted a fighting song and I was like ‘man just let me hear it.’ I’m sittin there listening to it and he was having writers block. The beat was just playing for 5 or 6 hours, just ‘da dana dana dana’ and we were listening to it, like ‘man what we gonna do with this beat?’ My mom came in the room and said to turn it off cause’ she had work in the morning. So we said ‘mama can you make us some food to eat, cause’ we’re hungry’. So, we’re sitti’n there, eatin’ pork chops and corn, then he like, man I got writers block, man I cant write to this, so he went to sleep. I stood on the chimney and I’m writing my verse and everything. Then he woke up, I was on the chimney and he had pushed me, and that’s where the ‘hold up’ came from in the song, cause’ I was like man hold up whatchu doin.. So we just runnin’ around and dancing and all that and I did this dance, and we called it the Stanky Legg and that’s where it originated from.

KeepItTrill.com: That was the song that got you recognized by Joc for the record deal?

Prince: Yea

KeepItTrill.com: Tell us more about that. What were you doing when you got the call?

Prince: We had a show going on with Bay Bay from K104, that’s the DJ out there. He hit us up and had said the song is rockin’. He said ‘why don’t ya’ll come out to Shreveport and do a show’ so we said cool, we drove out to Shreveport and then did a show at club Coco’s. After we did the show, we were sittin’ next to the vip room and he was like ‘ya’ll rocked the show, they never heard ya’ll song before, give me a month and I get ya’ll a deal.’ Ya know, a lot of people always say they’re gonna do this and do that and that’s how we felt about that situation. And in a month he called me and was like ‘Hey, didn’t I tell you I got you a deal?’ I was like man you playin, and then all I know is he said ‘Joc’ and then Joc came on the phone and then that’s the deal.

KeepItTrill.com: What music did you guys grow up listening to?

Marc D: It’s real different. Everyone has their different ones. Like Soufside, he listens to Boosie and Webbie on occasions and stuff, and like Slim Thug. Prince, he’s from NY, so you know he listens to Fifty. That’s him all day. Me, I like to switch it up. I listened to Kanye, cause’ of the lyrics, Ludacris, or the Dream. Soft stuff. Slizz, he’ll be listenin’ to Texas dudes like, Trae and Z-Ro. And then D.K, Jamie Foxx, cause’ he’s the singer of the group.

KeepItTrill.com: With all the one hit wonders making dance songs, what sets you apart from the rest of the pack and how will you maintain your longevity in hip hop?

Prince: What I know now is we got a singer in the group, so we got a-whole-other vibe, know what I’m sayin’? If dance music does die out, we hit em’ with that singing real hard and bring another vibe to em’.

Soufside: Like Prince said, we do got a singer in the group, that is for the ladies, and then we can get lyrical, ya’ kno it’s just whatever they want us to do. It’s whatever the fans want. Fans like different things, so we just do what we have to do.

KeepItTrill.com: Do ya’ll have any plans for a second single?

Marc D: We in Atlanta right now, we were just working on it last night. Shout out to Sammie, he was in the building too, and we were working on our second single last night. So ya’ll probably be hearing that real soon.

KeepItTrill.com: Ya’ll got a name for that yet?

Marc D: Umm, na, not yet.

KeepItTrill.com: Will the song have a deeper message, or will that it another feel good type of party and dance song that people can vibe to, like Stanky Legg?

Marc D: Well, it all depends, in this music thing. When you’re in demand, you’re in demand. Right now, with Stanky Legg, they like to see us move. They like to see us have energy, and they like to see us dance. So in reality, we’ll probably just see what the fans want. We’re probably gonna give them some more energy and some more stuff to move to.

KeepItTrill.com: As far as your debut album, do you have any plans for it, or a title or release date?

Marc D: Uh, na, na not yet

KeepItTrill.com: Do you have any collabs set up? Tell us about some of the features we can expect on it.

Marc D: We were in the studio the other day with Diddy. We did a track with Ray J, we’re working with Joc, working with Sammie. We’re working with a lot of people right now and especially with Hot Stylz, being my label mate.

KeepItTrill.com: We have many aspiring artists who visit our website everyday that are trying to make their first big hit. What advice can you give them?

Marc D: Well, really, what we learned is, as we started coming from the bottom up, you gotta stay focused and stay humbled. It’s gonna take hard, hard work! You cannot give up, because Stanky Legg was just a normal dumb dance song, but we took the song seriously because this is what we wanted to do. If somebody is not gonna take you seriously, you figure, you take yourself seriously and just keep grindin’. Like Prince would say, if somebody isn’t gonna ride with you, there’s always gonna be somebody there to ride with you. You just gotta keep on pushing yourself and believing in yourself and get where you want to be. That’s how we had to do it. We pushed the YouTube videos. We had our first vehicles [like] little Honda’s and F-150’s. [We] drove from Dallas to Houston, Louisiana, on our own gas money. Just rode 5 cars deep, packing up in hotels. We bought two rooms for like 10 people, and we just made sure we made it happen, because this is what we wanted to do and we wanted to make it happen for ourselves and our families.

KeepItTrill.com Are there any tour plans for you guys or Swagg Team Entertainment?

Prince: Na, not at the moment, but we’ve been opening up for Jeezy and TI. That was amazing.

KeepItTrill.com: That’s really great. Who are some of the artists that you haven’t worked with so far, that you would like to work with in the future?

Marc D: I wanna work with 3 people: Kanye, Luda and The Dream

Soufside: I wanna do something with Lil Boosie & Webbie

Prince: I wanna work with Fifty, he seems like a mastermind.

KeepItTrill.com: What would most people be surprised to learn about you?

Soufside: Most famous celebs are stuck up, so I guess people might think we’re stuck up, but we’re not. We’re some cool young talented people to kick it with, you know, we just like to have fun.

Marc D: Joc’s like our big brother and our mentor, so he taught us a lot. We know when to be business men and know when to have fun and when to get serious. When you come around us, we just have so much energy, and we just live life to the fullest, because your day tomorrow is not always promised, you will not be on the radio, you will not have it the next day. It can all be taken away!
