Southern rap-pioneer Bun B is being recognized for his contributions to the community.

The rapper, one half of the legendary UGK duo, is being awarded his own holiday by the City of Houston. August 30th will now be known as “Bun B Day” as Mayor Annise Parker and Houston’s City Council will declare the day as a holiday in the city with a formal proclamation. A public ceremony will be held tomorrow at Houston’s City Hall at 1:30 p.m., where Bun will be honored with his own day for his contributions to both Hip Hop and his local community.

Houston’s local hip-hop scene has been blessed with individuals who give more to their community than most. Rap-A-Lot records CEO J. Prince was awarded with his own holiday, by former Mayor Bill White, in 2007 for his outstanding efforts in the community. In the following year, Trae Tha Truth was also honored with his own day, which now marks a free annual concert and many giveaways to the community on July 22.

In related news, Bun B is currently in his second year of teaching as professor at Houston’s prestigious Rice University.
