Album review: Boyz II Men – Twenty

16 November 2011 354 views 2 Comments

Boyz II Men’s newly released album, Twenty, is appropriately titled as the group celebrates their status of over twenty years in the music business. Twenty is a follow up to their 2009 album, Love, which included covers of previously recorded classic love songs. Twenty is a double disc album and includes one CD of twelve new songs and another CD of nine re-recorded Boyz II Men mega hits.

Twenty is Boyz II Men’s tenth studio album and features songs produced by Grammy Award winning producers, including Babyface, Teddy Riley and Tim & Bob. The group remains consistent and fans can expect to hear that classic Boyz II Men sound throughout the album. Their harmonious singing style is what made Boyz II Men so popular twenty years ago.

Boyz II Men stay true to their roots on newer ballads like the track One More Dance, where they demonstrate their pitch perfect street corner harmony. To switch things up a bit, their vocals are smooth and velvet-like on the upbeat tempo track, So Amazing. On the track Slowly, produced by Tim & Rob, Boyz II Men show us their grown and sexy side with this sensuous, sultry track. Twenty doesn’t disappoint and gives listeners an even balance of ballads and upbeat melodies.

Former Boyz II Men bass singing member, Michael McCary, who left the group in 2003 due to health reasons, was expected to reunite with the group to record Twenty. According to Boyz II Men’s official website, unfortunately the final negotiations between McCary and the group fell through. The remaining group members, Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman recorded the album as a trio. McCary’s absence is noticeable and changes the dynamic of the group, it would have been ideal to hear the original quartet. With over twenty years under their belt and numerous accolades, Boyz II Men remains one of the most talented R&B male vocal groups of all time. They continue to impress listeners with their timeless music and unique harmonies.
