Lil B A Marketing Genius?
Some rappers market themselves as stoners, gangsters, pimps, bosses, kings, but Gods? Consider it blasphemous, but I consider it bold. Because what’s a God to a king? It’s a genius scheme. In case you haven’t gotten it yet, BasedGod is who I’m talking about. One of the most controversial, questioned, figures in Hip-Hop. Personally, his music isn’t my cup of tea, but you can’t not admire his marketing. In my humble opinion Lil B is the God of marketing in Hip-Hop. But this God thing, let’s take a closer look, and see exactly why some people keep listening to him, although some of his words don’t even rhyme. Brrrraaatatathangthang.
“Why is Lil B famous?”, is everything you see on Lil B posts. Well people like him because they believe they gain something when they listen to him. I’m not joking. The formula is easy, yet hard to imitate. Make your listeners believe that you’re some sort of knowledge mine. That’s why all of his videos say “rare”, “wow”, and “touching”. Drill the fact that they’re actually learning something, even when they’re not. Lil B’s use of keywords has sanctified him amongst his fans, and made him a lot of money along the way.
Then if you don’t listen to Lil B, you’re stupid. Much like followers of religion, if you aren’t in it, you’re losing out brah. This BasedGOD thing is real! The thank you BasedGOD thing is real! I wouldn’t be surprised if people really prayed to him. Anywho, claiming that you’re a God isn’t good enough. WOOP. You have to be rebellious in parallel to that of a religions figure. Jesus the most famous religious figure went out against the norm in his time. Right now, Lil B is going out against the fashion norm much like Jesus went out against circumcision. Who said dudes can’t wear bright pink shirts, tiny pants, and Rosie the Riveter bandanas? Who says someone can’t name their album I’m Gay, and wear his grandmas earnings. Claiming that you’re a God isn’t a good enough marketing scheme, you have to back it up. When you back it up, and act like some sort of knowledge giving Messiah, people unconsciously believe you. BasedMan has done just that. SWAG.
Next time you ask, “Why is Lil B popular?” “Why do people listen to him?” It’s because his marketing is God-like. If God helps Tebow win, then God must be helping Lil B promote himself. Like I said, Lil B isn’t my cup of tea. But I can’t say that I don’t have fun listening to his music. If I would’ve handed an award out for “most interesting rapper of 2011″, Lil B would’ve gotten my award. Although people over look him, tons of artists, and executives alike could learn a bundle about his big time money makin’ marketing scheme. By drilling keywords into the minds of his listeners, verbally claiming that he’s a God, then backing it up by challenging the norm, Lil B has undoubtedly become the Hip-Hop marketing God. But why do all of his video chicks look like they just got snatched off the street by a white van while on their way to school?
